Virtual Reality and Gaming: The Immersion Experience

Since its early introduction, virtual reality (VR) has changed the way consumers experience the world around them. Although VR isn’t a new concept, the evolution of gaming gear add-ons, such as Facebook’s Oculus Rift, has achieved a newer, higher level of user immersion aimed at revolutionizing the total gaming and video experience.

VR developers are also working to ensure that the latests versions of VR headsets no longer come with the dreaded side effect of motion sickness, which has hindered the VR headset’s appeal so far. Along with eliminating motion sickness during the gaming experience, developers are also working to improve the VR  gaming immersion experience by enhancing avatar movement capabilities.

This level of play will enable the consumer to perform natural movements such as: Walking, running and jumping in a virtual world, thus adding to the adventure of being transported beyond the sofa. Adding to the adventure is the 360 degree VR gaming experience, that allows for total human immersion while keeping you physically involved in play and in shape for the real world.

Oculus Rift

Since acquiring Oculus, Facebook launched the consumer version of their Oculus Rift headset to the world in early 2016, marking the beginning of a new era of gaming, where users experience total immersion with a 360 degree visual field.

The Oculus Rift comes available with 3D interactive content, allowing users to immerse themselves in games, go inside movies, time travel, space travel or just hang with friends in VR.


Virtuix Omni

The Virtuix Omni is an active VR motion platform that allows users to experience actions in the virtual world through first-person navigation. Actions like running or walking create an unparalleled sense of immersion that cannot be experienced sitting down.

The Omni engages the entire body, transforming the gaming experience, enabling the consumer to move naturally in virtual worlds. Another great feature of the Omni is that the consumer has unlimited motions in VR.

Sony Playstation VR

The Sony PlayStation VR, an add-on for the Playstation 4 (PS4), is set to launch in October. The VR headset will be priced around $399, and it will come packaged with the necessary connecting hardware and cables. You will need to purchase the PS4 gaming unit, motion-tracking Move controllers and the PS camera separately.

Although the PS4 headset is relatively less expensive than its competitors, the level of immersion in VR is comparable to the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, in that you’ll experience 360 degrees of natural action in a virtual world with clear resolution, freedom of motion and real-world simulation.

Aside from the comfort-fitted VR headset and extra sensors that enhance the immersion experience, you’ll have access to all of the features of the PS4, including the menus. In VR, you’ll also have the option of entering “cinematic mode.”


HTC Vive

Taiwan’s HTC Vive is set to launch in April, although pre-orders began shipping on March 31. The HTC Vive will have more than 60 games at launch. The VR headset will also include motion controllers. Among the exceptional gaming capabilities of the HTC Vive is the roomscale option that provides for a positive immersive VR experience.

The HTC Vive’s custom sensors and optics system provides an incredible visual experience with an immersive, wide field of view. It’s first-person navigation capability creates a natural sense of immersion that allows the consumer to experience a whole new level of play.
