The origins of Placr lie over a decade ago in 1999 when Jonathan Raper and David Mountain were amongst the first in the world to design and build location-based services (LBS) on prototype hardware and early mobile data networks in the giCentre at City University London. We have worked for ten years on a series of LBS projects (Hypergeo (PDF), WebPark, LBS4all and Locus) that have led the way on new technologies and business models. The WebPark project was spunoff to create Camineo SAS, a leading mobile guide technology company and the Locus project developed one of the first augmented reality prototypes in 2007.

After moving to part time roles at the University in 2008 we founded Placr to bring research-led innovation in location technology to market. Since our foundation we have obtained funding from the EU Galileo Programme for MetaPos and the Technology Strategy Board for Travelr. This support has enabled Placr to develop an advanced LBS toolset for working with maps, addressing, transport and 3D datasets in real-time and location sensitive applications for mobile. Our partners and clients include eCourier, ideas.org, Camineo, Positium, Technology Strategy Board and Transport for London.
