How will artists harness virtual reality technology? Will artists like Jon Rafman set the tone or direction for fine art in the 21st century? Artistic movements perhaps develop as experiments; conceptual executions that may illustrate ideas, innovations and the application of technology as our real world changes. What is the role of the artist in this new virtual world? My aim will be to provide insight for readers about the role of the artist and art as it pertains to this emerging virtual reality technology.
Over the next 6 months, I will be exploring virtual and augmented reality as an artist and participant in the XR Festival, a technology event that is bringing together startups, investors and a great line up of keynote speakers. According to the festival organizer, Andrew Prell, CEO of Convergence, leaders in the tech segment such as Nolan Bushnell, Founder of Atari, will be speaking at the event. The XR Festival is a first of its kind technology event to position itself during Derby Week in Louisville which attracts more than 1.5 million people to the area.
